IT automation. What is it and what are the benefits?

The word automation is synonymous with robotics, AI…think robots on a manufacturing line. But automation can actually be the key to a modern, dynamic IT environment.

What is IT automation?

Essentially IT automation is as task that automation can be applied to. Some examples of this are network automation, cloud provisioning and standard operating environments. Even application deployment and configuration management. The automation process reduces the need for human interventions, which can mean the task is completed quicker and more efficiently.

What other advantages are there with IT automation?

  • Cost savings
    • Fewer labour hours are required to complete routine tasks. Automation can also increase productivity, reduce infrastructure costs, and decrease the risk of user error.
  • Time savings
    • By automating the most repetitive and time-consuming tasks, staff can free-up their time to spend on business-critical tasks.
  • Reduced errors
    • Automation ensures consistency on a large scale, which is virtually impossible to do at an individual level
  • Better security
    • Automated processes require fewer humans to safeguard sensitive data and IP, ultimately reducing the risk of a cyber attack.

The future of IT automation

Whilst we’d all love a crystal ball to see what the future holds for IT automation, at the moment we know that automation is definitely playing a big part in the industry. More and more systems and stacks will be built using IT automation, which can only mean that the IT workforce will become more productive and efficient, so much so that a cyber security risk will be automatically detected, patched, tested and deployed all whilst your team are sleeping.
